Memories of Maureen Glazier
Maureen Michelle Glazier
May 23, 1972 to August 11, 2005
In 1994 Maureen graduated Summa Cum Laude in French, and English, Literature from the Honors Program at UCLA, and as a Fullbright Scholar. In her junior year at UCLA she was one of 30 students world-wide to be accepted to the University of Paris Center for Critical Studies –majoring in Film, and French Philosophy and Literature. As a Fulllbright Scholar, Maureen returned to Paris to teach English to students at a French Lycee. Upon returning to the U.S., a job at the U.S. Passport Office in Los Angles led to a Scholarship at USC School of International Relations. A career as a Foreign Service Officer in the U.S. State Department was an ideal fit for her love of travel and linguistic ability: she served in Warsaw, Poland; Sarejevo, Bosnia; Tunis, Tunisia; and was to have been the Assistant Press Secretary at the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt, just one month after her death. She received a Journalistic Fellowship to Al Jazeera TV. Maureen spoke, read and wrote fluent French, Spanish, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, and Arabic, and spoke some German, Italian and Hungarian.
Maureen died less than 3 months after her 33rd birthday. She was an extraordinary young woman in so many ways. She took her intellectual gifts, artistic and linguistic talents, and accomplishments in stride, and accepted them as normal. She raised $100,000.00 for land mine clean-up in Bosnia, which was matched by Princess Di’s Foundation; she received several State Department Awards. The many awards and accolades for her theatrical, art, and musical abilities went unnoticed by most of her family and friends. As a child, Maureen attended the School of the Philadelphia Ballet, Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, and was a graduate of the Barbizon School of Modeling in Denver, Co. She acted in plays at The Melodrama and Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, CA. In the last few years of her life she became an accomplished Scuba Diver, and enjoyed diving off the Croatian and Dalmatian coasts, as well as Cozumel, and Reunion, France, off the coast of Africa.
